Postcards from Tazacorte
Postcards from TazacorteNovember 07, 2002 21:22
We took our time getting up after our late and my sick arrival the night before. We decided to leave the room only when it got very humid. The guy at the front desk told me that it had been unusually humid lately. We wandered around a bit looking for a "famous" tobacco shop that turned out to be one older gentleman at a desk cutting cigars. No competition for Ybor City! There was a nice town area with beautiful building façades to investigate, but eventually we needed to feed ourselves. We got some mediocre lunch on the main drag, then walked around a bit more. We eventually retrieved the car and headed across the island on a really curvy road. There were tons of flowers to see, but a thick mist at altitude hampered some of the great vistas. We stopped at the visitors center where another mini-dog (there were many there) begged for food. We got a map and 2 coffees for Jeanette then took off. We drove on toward the west where we saw giant banana fields, some covered by airplane hangar-sized tents, possibly for ripening. We tried the town of Puerto de Naos before moving on. P. d. N. was a boring collection of apartment buildings bordering a cool, but claustrophobic-ally surrounded, beach. Everything was in German. We spotted a postcard for the town of Puerto de Tazacorte and decided to head up the coast to find it. It turned out to be a quaint tourist village, albeit with a fair bit of construction. We decided to stay there for 2 nights and got help from two local women to rent out a very nice apartment with a great view of the beach and the village center. We found a place for a beer and met a few cute gatitos, including one very small, sad baby who hopefully got enough tourist handouts to make it. He got a few from us. After a quick dip in the water, we tried some of the minis from Los Christianos and went to find dinner. Jeanette had some yummy pizza and I had some really good grilled squid. We also tried bienmesabe, a honey and pistachio paste that is quite good. Next article: On Top of the WorldOur honeymoon trip to the Canary Islands - Friday, August 19, 2011
