This week I'm in Berlin for work, actually staying in Potsdam.Potsdam is a very quaint little town with an old town center that Ihaven't gotten to see yet.I managed to take the train in and around Berlin today.I saw part of the Wall, the Natural History Museum, Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Reichstag (state house).
The Wall was very interesting.Only a little of it is left standing.Although it's only 10 feet tall in most places, the deadly part was the death zo...

I'm headed back to the states in a few hours.Crazy week that included:

Walking around the roof of a 8 storey library building
Visiting the 300-year old clock tower of the Salzburg Museum
    Lots of walking
Kicking drunk Austrians out of the way to take panoramic photos
A crazy conversation with Holgar and Albert, two "Communications"grad students

It'll be nice to be home.

We've been up in Breckenridge this week and I can definitely say that the cold has kept many people off of the slopes. Even Jeanette has yet to go out, but I don't blame her when it's probably -10F at the top. I've made it out a few times and today on 4 of the 6 runs, I didn't see anyone else on the majority of the run.
It was definitely one of those surreal days when you only see two or three lifts in front of you when the wind blows the snow around. It's nice though....

Dinner with Granny

We had a quick dinner with Granny on the way to the airport to return to dinner after our visit to St. Pete. It was nice to get to spend some time with Granny and we only wish that we lived closer....

A Reflection on Pups

Note: I wrote this at the request of my grandmother for my grandfather's funeral mass.
I was fortunate to spend a large proportion of my life around my grandfather, much of it during some of the years that he probably enjoyed best. My experience with him certainly leads me to a different picture of him from that of his children, his wife, or even my sister.
As a child, my early impressions of Pups formed as I spent time around him at my grandparents house in Forestdale, MA. I remember a...

Wrapping up a trip to Vegas

This week I was in Las Vegas, participating in a Microsoft Developers conference. The content was pretty good... I was mainly interested in Iron Python, ASP.NET 2.0, AJAX for ASP.NET, and some of the Visual Studio framework and tools. I came out with my coworkers Steve and Jim. We had a decent week of attending the conference and doing a little sightseeing after hours.
The best talk at the conference was one about making websites accessible to users who need to use text-only readers or speech...

La Brea Tar Pits and Page Museum

OK, so I also managed to make it by the La Brea Tar Pits and the Page Museum today. One of my all time to-do list things to do. I enjoyed the walk through the museum as well as the reminiscing about undergrad. The dire wolf and saber tooth skeletons were incredible, in number as well as individually. Sad that the appearance of humans spelled the end of so many large mammals. The lions, tigers, and wolves were probably beautiful, not to mention the mastodons, bears, and other animals....

Snow in the high country

We spent a nice quiet weekend in Breckenridge and saw some wet, heavy snow. There was no real excitement this weekend... some annoyances with the HOA. We did find time to take a nice hike up the road and then down the ski slopes behind the condo. Didn't find any silverware this time!...

Visiting Gabrielle

A little over 11 years ago, my sister passed away. It's hard to believe it's been that long. Last weekend at a family reunion for the Jeromes, Danielle, Jeanette, Lance, Jesse, and I went to visit here grave and see her new headstone. It was peaceful up there in Hallock... virtually a ghost town. But sad.
At least she led a happy life while she was able.

A week in San Antonio

I just spent a week in San Antonio, TX, for work. Pretty city. One of the funniest comments that I thought myself and repeatedly heard was that you wouldn't even believe that you were in Texas based on the look and feel of the city.
The conference I was at was so-so. The water industry supports a lot of small and large vendors. My feet were bruised after four days in the booth. Must request more padding.
The food down there was pretty good. More atmosphere than anything else. You're...

Coral Bleaching Signals Global Warming

Read a sad article in the St. Pete Times this weekend about massive bleaching in Carribean coral reefs. Aparrently last year saw record warm temperatures in the Carrib and this year is supposed to be more of the same. Sad thing is that the loss of the reefs could lead to some truly mass local extinctions. And George W doesn't believe in global warming......
