We went to Sushi Ran in Sausalito last night for the special occasion. We regret not bringing the camera. The sushi was truly amazing.I loved the fried salmon skin.Jeanette loved the omakase roll, a variable chef's special that included truffle oil, spice, tuna, scallop, and avocado. It was delicious.

Fishy Sushi at Japon

We stopped in at Japon tonight...either we're too critical or food is just getting bad in Denver. We had a spider roll, Philadelphia roll, a spicy yellow tail roll, and tobiko, plus a seaweed salad. Japon seemed likea good potential quick stop after Kelvin's birthday party. Unfortunately, it was a waste of $55.
The oddest thing was that everything tasted like it had sugar in it. How can spicy yellow tail be sweet? The spider roll was like half spider, half California... crispy ends, s...

Barolo Grill: A Great Italian Experience

Perhaps it was the terrible time we'd just experienced at Luca d'Italia that made our experience at Barolo Grill even better. However, as this was the third time to a restaurant where we had sampled their excellent desserts and wine list on our two prior visits,I'm reasonably certain that we had a genuinely good time.
Desperately in search of good food, wine, and warmth, plus eager not to make Grandma wait at home alone for too long with the new little one, J and I turned to the B...

Luca D'Italia: Don't bother...

Since mom was in town and this weekend was our 5th anniversary, we had the opportunity to go out for a nice evening out. Browsing for some of the nicer restaurants in our neighborhood, I decided to make a reservation for Luca d'Italia, a place that seemed to have a variety of good reviews and some suspiciously mixed reviews, as well. You've got to give a place a try, right?
We arrived at 8:15, on time for our reservation, and found that we and several other couples, some of whom had r...

Giampietro's for Great Calzones

Our favorite place to eat in Breckenridge for taste, atmosphere, and value has to be Giampietro Pasta & Pizzeria. The restaurant is tiny, seating only about 20-30 at the most, and often has a wait in the busy season. Our favorite is the calzone, a virtual medium pizza folded over on itself that serves two and is a fantastic deal at around $9.00 depending on whether or not you add extra toppings. Our typical choice is something like feta, spinach, pepperoni, and anchovies. I can't wait f...

The other night I went with Eric and Noah to try Bandana's Bar-B-Q in Lakewood. The place had the atmosphere of a fast-food restaurant, but the menu had a variety of good choices ranging from BBQ beef, pork, turkey, chicken and sausage to their 'famous' deep fried corn on the cob. No joke. We each selected a three-meat combo plate and were served heaping plates of fries, smoked meat, and french bread. The BBQ at Bandana's is the dry variety. The meat is smoked and then served wi...

Rioja -- Better the Second Time

Our first trip to the Larimer Square restaurant Rioja had us trying a disgusting fig appetizer that had the texture of slugs, a second unremarkable appetizer that was a tiny portion, and finally getting overcharged at the end of the evening. After that we stayed away for a while, but when my mom came into town, we decided to give it a second chance as we had heard increasingly good things about it from our friends.
So we returned.
Rioja is in half of the converted location of one of my ol...

We went to Le Central with mom and our neighbors the other night. It wasn't our first time and certainly won't be our last. The main reason we return, other than the quaint attempt at European atmosphere, is the delicious selection of mussels (moules) that they offer, accompanied by unlimited quantities of some of the best french fries in Denver. This particular night, I tried my favoried, the spicy Coquillages L' Italienne and J tried Moules du Midi, requesting a little bit of ext...

In a word: Hospitality.
For a restaurant that features Southern fare, it absolutely lacks Southern charm.
I recently organized a baby shower at Luciles in Denver. This was baby #2 for the recipient so it was organized as a Ladies Brunch. The guest of honor had her heart set on trying Luciles so I called for a reservation. Hmmmm...problem number one. I was promptly, if not a little rudely, informed that Luciles doesnt take reservations. Then I was informed that Sunday brunch is very busy a...

Erawan Cafe: Old Standard, New Look

We recently returned to the Erawan Cafe, a self-billed home-style Thai and Chinese restaurant, for the first time in years even though we can walk to it. It's not that our first experience was bad, that we didn't like the food, or even that it was too expensive. In fact, when we went three years ago, we had a great meal that was both tasty and reasonably priced. I think the only problem was that there are just too many places to try!
The Cafe recently underwent a renovation that gave ...

Last night we went to the Red Room-- Restaurant and Bar, an institution near the Capitol Building that has a great reputation for good food and an interesting atmosphere. From the outside, the place looks a bit sketchy, as if it was one of the many scary dives along Colfax, such as the infamous "Squire" where they have lunch specials... but don't serve food. Walking into the Red Room, it turns out to be a boisterous bar with a loft seating people upstairsthat looks a bit cuter than ...

We tried a brand new restaurant the other night, the Buenos Aires Grill. From the name, you can probably tell that it's the upscale sister restaurant to one of our favorites, the Buenos Aires Pizzeria.
The Grill is down the street from the pizzeria, but couldn't look much more different. Instead of the worn, loved and lived-in look of the pizzeria, the Grill has two beautiful brick, glass, and wood levels of another old building on the corner of Arapahoe and 22nd. There is also a ch...

We decided to try La Cueva (which meansThe Cave)for lunch anddrove out Colfax to Aurora, pretty much stopping in the pit of a long tattooed arm that runs due east from the capital building in Denver. Parking along the street is a little bit of a hassle, though...

One of our staple favorites has definitely got to be Chef Zorba's Cuisine in the Congress Park neighborhood. J describes it as a diner like the one in Seinfeld and I'd have to agree that it has that potential.
Chef Zorba's has consistently good diner-style Greek and American food. I believe that they even have some Mexican and interesting combos such as the gyro cheeseburger... exactly what it soundslike. J loves the fact that most of their sandwich and lunch meals come with a hea...

True to its reputation, when we arrived on a Thursday at 7:30 PM, every seat was filled and there was a modest wait of about 20 minutes. When we were seated, we had no problem selecting the mussels appetizer, the chicken parm, and Mark's Special, a butterfly...
