7 Hours of Eiffel Tower July 25, 2011 22:43

Image page [Taking a break on the Eiffel Tower]

On Monday morning, I woke up pretty early. Jeanette had not slept well, so I let her sleep and got ready to go out for a bit. Ben woke up and after playing around a little, I asked him if he wanted to go get some pastries. He was up for it, so we took a brief walk out and around the block to where I had found a couple of patisseries on my phone.

It was pretty cool to be walking out in Paris with Mr. Ben. He was very curious, but wasn't completely happy with my patisserie store selecti [more]

Dinner in Montmartre July 26, 2011 17:04

On Tuesday morning, we all had seemed to sleep a bit better, but it was clear that Ben was not feeling his perky self. I had tucked a thermometer in my bag and it turned out that he was running a 101-102 fever. He had no other symptoms so we weren't terribly worried about him, but I went out eventually to get some medicine and some breakfast for myself (Jeanette wanted to shop for her own).

I found a pharmacy and got some acetaminophen-like medicine with no problem. I checked out a co [more]

Pastries near the Arc de Triomphe July 27, 2011 22:07

On Wednesday, Ben was clearly feeling a bit better. There were a few things that we wanted to do so we headed out after all taking showers (we had finally figured out the hot water in the flat) and headed toward the metro. Ben actually expressed some hunger even though he hadn't been interested in pastries that we had at the place, so we stopped in a brasserie where we got him a French version of a hot dog while we split a plate. His hot dog was quite a meal... a hot dog in a French roll bun [more]

Canary Islands 2002

Jeanette and I set off on another adventure on All Saints Day, 2002. This was to be a trip to the Canary Islands as well as our honeymoon. We picked the Canaries because I had been curious about them ever since elementary school history classes and because the ticket ended up being cheaper than tickets to Spain or Portugal. Go figure.

We left a frigid Denver day (17 F) hopefully for a nice mild Canary Islands vacation. We were picked up at the house by the Maui Wowi limo (Jeanette worked [more]

Pot Roast on the Plane November 02, 2002 21:14

We finally left Gatwick after an uneventful four hours in which we tried some tea and a terrible croissant. The flight down to Tenerife was fun because now that we switched from American Airlines to British Airways, we finally got free alcohol. They must know it's a tourist and holiday trip because they passed the drinks out freely. We read the silly British trash mag, drank our drinks, and relaxed. Jeanette ate a yummy salmon dish while I had pot roast. (We had played with special meals on the [more]

Greece 2001

Jeanette Leaves San Francisco June 22, 2001 22:28

In 2001, after dating for about 3 months, we took a trip together to Greece. Pretty daring, we booked only the first night and the couple of nights in Santorini. We had a great trip, which was good especially because we were engaged by then! Jeanette wrote the first journal entry, but that was it.

My trip began with a fairly humorous conversation with my sister Anita. Her views on life, men, etc. are very funny when coupled with three hours of sleep and a 5:30 AM wake-up call. I made it [more]

Frankfurt to Athens June 24, 2001 23:15

Image page [Blurry Shot of the Acropolis at Night]

We arrived in Athens on time, though not without wishes to drop a couple of children behind us out of the airplane before we even arrived! Everything seems to be going so easily on this trip... baggage was easy, customs was nonexistent (both of us, but especially Jeanette, were disappointed not to get a stamp in our passports in either Frankfort or Greece). We even ran into one of Jeanette's former coworkers in the Athens airport, which was pretty funny.

We retrieved money from an ATM an [more]

Leaving Denver for Spain March 11, 2006 12:00

Image page [Relaxing in Madrid]

We started out bright and early so that we could drop off Milo at his favorite temporary residence, Shylo Country Club for Dogs. He seemed as happy as ever to be there and we headed back to the airport. It was easy enough to get through check in and we stopped for our customary breakfast burrito before getting on the plane. The plane rides were uneventful except that Jeanette lost her Blackberry getting off the plane in Philadelphia. Well... I guess that's what her work gets for wanting her [more]

A Tired Arrival in Madrid March 12, 2006 12:43

Image page [Bustling Puerta del Sol at night, Madrid]

We arrived into a Madrid morning after an uneventful, but fairly restless flight where neither of us slept very well. The flight over the countryside was pretty and we did see glimpses of Portugal and miles of olive trees and other agriculture. The cities seem fairly concentrated in contrast to the U.S. The airport was easy to navigate and baggage claim and customs proved to be no problem at all. We had arranged a rental car from Hertz, found it, and it turned out to be a cute little Peugeo [more]

Exploring Madrid After a Late Wake Up March 13, 2006 12:44

Image page [Finding the good stuff in Madrid]

We had no watch to keep time on our trip because mine had broken a few weeks before and I ran out of chances to buy a cheap one before we left. Consequently, we had no idea what time it was when we awoke on our first full day 'in country.' We got out of bed and asked the hotel clerk and were quite surprised to find that it was noon. We had probably slept about 12 hours... and I needed it!

We headed out so as not to waste more of the day and found our way back to the pedestrian walking ma [more]
